BATRIATRIC SURGERY

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve Gastrectomy

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW:

Sleeve Gastrectomy is a keyhole laparoscopic procedure done to make the stomach smaller. This bariatric intervention results in a reduction in stomach volume and a decrease in appetite. This was found to be linked to the lower levels of the hunger hormone Ghrelin after the surgery. In other words, the part of the stomach that is removed during the sleeve gastrectomy is where this hormone is produced. This surgery is done with minimal post-operative scarring that is hidden under the waistline, to ensure a cosmetic appearance.

INDICATIONS FOR SURGERY:

The advanced surgery clinic follows the guidelines of the International Federation For Fhe study of Obesity (IFSO). Accordingly, the following group of patients are eligible for bariatric surgery:

  • BMI between 30-34.9 kg/m2 with accompanying comorbidity
  • BMI of 35 kg/m2 or above regardless of the presence or absence of comorbidity

PS: The final decision regarding eligibility for bariatric surgery will be made by Dr. Hakky on a case-by-case basis after a consultation takes place and full clinical and nutritional examinations are conducted.

COMPLICATIONS:

There is no surgery, whether big or small that does not have a potential for complications. But having said that, Dr. Hakky and his team pride themselves in having one of the lowest complication rates internationally.

POST-OPERATIVE EXPECTATIONS:

  • No stitches will need to be removed because they are all under the skin and they all self dissolve.
  • There will be no drain in place.
  • There is a complex formula to calculate excess body weight loss but to simplify things, one can expect to lose about 27-30% of their total body weight with a sleeve gastrectomy.
  • Dr. Hakky and his team will provide you with a fully structured diet that needs to be followed together with some recipe ideas. You will also see our nutritionist as part of the follow up plan.
