GENERAL AND EMERGENCY SURGERY

Appendectomy

Appendectomy

CONDITION OVERVIEW:

The appendix is a small part of the gastrointestinal system which commonly gets inflamed and the only way to manage this inflammation is to have a surgical procedure to remove the appendix. Antibiotics have been tried to treat acute inflammation of the appendix with very little benefit.

SYMPTOMS:

  • Right sided lower abdominal pain
  • Sometimes the pain starts around the belly button
  • Nausea

LESS COMMONLY:

  •  Vomiting
  • Fever

If the symptoms of appendicitis are established and upon examination by Dr Sherif Hakky, the diagnosis is confirmed mostly with the use and the help of an ultrasound scan and urgent surgical procedure needs to be undertaken.

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW:

Mostly this procedure is carried out by the open surgical technique which cuts through the muscle and leaves a big scar Dr Hakky utilises a mini laparoscopic approach which involves three hardly-visible 5 mm incisions to avoid the scar and enhance recovery and early discharge from the hospital.
