Pre and post operative nutrition

Our clinical Nutritionist guides patients on a case-by-case basis both pre and post-operatively.

PRE-OPERATIVE NUTRITION

OVERVIEW:

Our pre-operative program is designed for patients who are at risk for intra-operative technical difficulties that potentially arise from having an enlarged fatty liver.

MONITORING:

These patients will be monitored by our nutritionist for approximately two weeks before the surgery date to ensure optimal pre-surgical conditions.

POST-OPERATIVE NUTRITION

OVERVIEW:

The bariatric surgery treatment option to treat obesity is seen as a multidisciplinary approach. This means that success with bariatric surgery is at its most with long-term commitment to changes in dietary habits. Sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgeries reduce stomach volume which in turn results in a significant reduction in the amount of food consumed. Without proper nourishment, muscle loss and nutritional deficiencies and their subsequent consequences could arise.

GOALS:

Our post-operative program emphasizes the importance of having a balanced diet rather than solely focusing on decreasing the quantity of food consumed. This will ensure that weight reduction after surgery is mainly due to fat loss, thereby leading to an increase in metabolic rate, that is, an improved fat-to-muscle ratio. This change in body composition will in turn lead to long-term weight loss maintenance and lower chances of relapse.

MONITORING:

Patients are followed anywhere from 6 months to 1-year post-operative.
